Library of Celsus Guide — Ephesus from Cruise Port
Ephesus's iconic two-storey facade — the postcard shot every cruise passenger wants.
Distance
20 km from Kuşadası port — mid-site on Curetes Street
Travel time
25–35 min coach, then 15–20 min walk from upper gate
Time needed
Allow 20–30 minutes including photos
The Library of Celsus is Ephesus's most photographed monument — a reconstructed Roman facade that once held 12,000 scrolls. It sits on Curetes Street near the lower entrance and draws the heaviest crowds between 10:00 and 14:00.
Cruise ships dock at Kuşadası Cruise Port, a modern terminal 2–3 km north of the town centre. Ephesus lies near Selçuk, roughly 20 km east — typically 25–35 minutes by coach. Allow 5–10 minutes taxi to the bazaar or 15–20 minutes walk along the waterfront. Confirm your all-aboard time and keep a 60–90 minute buffer before departure.
Built around AD 125 in honour of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, the library faced east so morning light illuminates the columns — best for photography before 11:00. The niches once held statues representing wisdom, knowledge, intelligence and virtue.
You cannot enter the library interior — viewing is from the street level. Combine with the Great Theatre five minutes further downhill. On tight schedules, see the library first while energy and light are good, then continue to the theatre.
